NINH BINH

Ninh Binh is the southernmost province of the Red river delta, northern Vietnam. Its chief town is Ninh Binh, 92km south of Hanoi, Hoa Binh province on the North, Day river on the East, Northeast, Ha Nam and Nam Dinh provinces, the East sea on its south. The coastal and sea area of Ninh Binh has been recognized biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Ninh BInh was the ancient capital of Dai Co Viet, an independent Vietnamese polity founded in 968 AD, under Dinh and Early Le dynasties from 968 to 1009.
 
 
Area: 1,390.3 km2
 
Population: 906,900 inhabitants (2011 Census). The ethnic groups include the Viet, as well as, Dao, Hoa, Hmong, Muong, Nung, Tay, Thai and others. There are 23 ethnic communities, among which the Viet are more than 98%.
 
Topography: Ninh Binh’s topography is divided clearly into 3 parts:
 
• The delta, on southeast, including Ninh Binh city, Yen Khanh district, Kim Son district and the remaining area of other districts in the province; this is the most populous area of the province. The main kind of soil is alluvial giving great potential to aquaculture and agriculture;
 
• The hilly and mountainous area in the West and South-West part of the province, includes the South-West area of Nho Quan district, Tam Diep town, The West of Gia Vien district, the South-West of Hoa Lu district and Yen Mo district; this area is appropriate to orchards and industrial trees;
 
• The coastal area with over 15 km of coastal line, lying through four coastal communes of Kim son district: Kim Trung, Kim Hai, Kim Dong, Kim Tan.
 
Rivers: consist of Day river, Hoang Long river, Boi river, An river, Vac river, Lang river, Van Sang river with total length of 496km spread widely in the whole province. 
 
Administrative units: 8 units comprising 1 city (Ninh Binh), 1 town (Tam Diep), 6 rural districts.
 
Climate: Ninh Binh has a tropical monsoon climate: hot, humid, rainy in summer with heavy rainfall from May to September,  dry and cold in winter from November to March next year. April and October are considered as Spring and Autumn. Average temperature is 23.50C.
 
 
Sights of interest
        
Ninh Binh has great potential in tourism as there are a lot of beautiful scenic landscapes: mounts, lakes, forests, as well as a great number of cultural and historic sites such as: Tam Coc – Bich Dong, Cuc Phuong National Park; Van Long Ecotourism area, Phat Diem Stone Church, the most recently is Trang An Ecological Tourism Complex recognized as World Heritage by Unesco on June 23rd 2014 (including Hoa Lu), Bai Dinh Pagoda (the biggest one in Vietnam). 
 
Hoa Lu ancient capital, from 968 to 1009,  was the first capital of feudal state of Vietnam, located at Truong Yen Commune, Hoa Lu district of Ninh Binh province, 100 km south of Hanoi, still having relics as palaces, temples, pagodas, royal toms related to Dinh and Early Le dynasties.
 
 
 
Tam Coc – Bich Dong (Tam grotto-Bich cave), known as “Ha Long Bay on earth”, is a famous ancient spot, belonging to Ninh Hai commune, Hoa Lu District. It retains the natural creation with many caves, grottoes, and historic relics such as: Thai Vi Temple, Tam grotto, Bich Cave pagoda, Tien Cave, Linh Coc pagoda… Tam Coc means three grottoes: Ca grotto, Hai grotto and Ba grotto. A two-hour cruise on a boat rowing by local women, permits to visitors to pass through the 3 caves adorned with beautiful stalactites.
 
 
 
 
Van Long natural reserve is located in Gia Vien district. Van Long is not only a natural reserve of wetlands but also the cultural relics. Van Long is a legendary land, a beautiful area and the largest natural reserve of wetlands. Here, guests will be seated on the boat to visit Van Long. A large space with spectacular mountain ranges creates a natural wall surrounded a vast expanse of water.
 
 
 
 
Phat Diem Cathedral is located in Kim Son district. It has oriental architecture, built in 1875s to 1898s. 'Phat Diem' means generating beauty, named by Nguyen Cong Tru. The church was built during 24 consecutive years. With the technical level and traffic conditions of the late 19th century, the method to transfer thousands of tons of stone, hundreds of ironwood trees to Phat Diem in order to build the cathedral is very difficult.

Kim Son - Con Noi coastal area with many tectonic values and outstanding biodiversity globally was listed in list of sites of Red River Delta Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO
 
 
Cuc Phuong National Park belongs to Nho Quan district, bounded between three provinces of Ninh Binh, Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa province. This is the first national park in Vietnam, established in July 1962. Cuc Phuong National Park has a population of abundant flora and fauna. The flora is various with 1.944 species. Diverse fauna includes 71 species of mammals, 300 species of birds, 33 reptiles and 16 amphibians.
 
  
 
 
Trang An Eco-Tourism Complex is a complex beauty - landscapes called as an 'outdoor geological museum' with numerous caves, mountains, valley water, trees and the historic relic. Trang An cave ecosystem almost belongs to Hoa Lu district and a part of northwest city of Ninh Binh province.
 
 
 
 
Bai Dinh pagoda is known as many records such as: the largest pagoda of Vietnam, the biggest gold - plated copper of Asia and the longest lobby in Asia. The pagoda is located at the western of the ancient capital Hoa Lu, belonging to Gia Sinh commune, Ninh Binh. It is far about 15 kilometers from Ninh Binh province and 95 kilometers from Hanoi. Bai Dinh Pagoda has an area of 539 hectares including 27 hectares of ancient Bai Dinh pagoda, 80 hectares of new Bai Dinh area.
